MODAFINIL : a "smart drug" that promotes Cognitive Function

Newsletter # 73

Animal models

Modafinil is a psychostimulant developed and approved for treatment of narcolepsy.
Potential benefits of modafinil for the treatment of cognitive deficits in various psychiatric and neurologic disorders were also reported.

The cognitive beneficial effects were also reported in different rodent paradigms.

  • Cognitive function is assessed in mice by the level of spontaneous alternation of mice in the T-maze.

Phencyclidine (PCP) induces a dramatic decrease in alternation of mice suggesting the presence of cognitive deficit.

Modafinil treatment dose-dependently reverses the disruptive effect of PCP.

NEUROFIT offers a range of validated in vitro and in vivo screening tests for psychiatry and neurology.
