Preview: Ibuprofen, Indomethacin, and Sulindac are NSAIDs reported to decrease the risk of AD

Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), known for their anti-inflammatory properties, are widely used to alleviate pain and reduce inflammation in various conditions. Numerous meta-analyses consistently link NSAID use to a reduced risk of Alzheimer's disease (AD). In AD, brain inflammation caused by beta-amyloid plaques and neurofibrillary tangles plays a significant role in disease progression. NSAIDs, besides their anti-inflammatory effects, may directly hinder the formation of beta-amyloid plaques 1 , influencing the disease's course. Specific NSAIDs like Ibuprofen, Indomethacin, and Sulindac are identified as potentially beneficial for AD.


Preclinical data from Neurofit suggests that these NSAIDs interfere with brain inflammation, providing protection against cognitive impairment. These findings, supported by cross-sectional studies, indicate a protective effect against AD risk among NSAID users, supporting the idea that inflammation is a key factor in AD pathophysiology.
